Map of x-holes

Postby Dino » Tue Mar 09, 2010 5:54 pm

Part of the fun of the x-holes for a newbie (like me) is finding the holes. That said, does anyone have a map (like the google map for the main 18, or otherwise) for the x-holes?

Thanks.

there may be but with all the trees i think it would be kinda useless. they're all easy to find, the only somewhat tricky part is the walk from 1 to 2.

Actually, following the original design of the X-holes (which start in the woods east of #6A position), the walk from X1 to X2 is relatively easy. The three hole-loop starting near the zoo hospital gate actually is X6-X4-X5. The erroneous numbering began with a tournament a few years ago when golfers were directed to start at "X1" (actually X6) and then exit to the NW and across the street to continue on "X2" (actually X1). A view with the GPS locations is attached, and both numbering systems are included.

Here's one with the "original" numbering and arrows showing the original and alternate routings.

"erroneous" could be debated and you are incorrect that the currently used route for the x holes began being used at a tournament (i think you are referring to an ice bowl that i ran). i didn't create the sequence. it began when the core group of golfers that were playing and maintaining the x holes decided that the new sequence flowed better than the old sequence. it had been played that way long before we started using the x holes at the ice bowl.

both routes include one long walk by druid standards-- either between x1 and x2 on the current sequence, or between x6 and hole 7 on the old sequence. even then, those walks are only an average distance compared to some of MD's other courses.

personally, i feel that playing 3 x holes between 4/5 and 3 between 6/7 is the best sequence for flow but is a little too complicated for tournament play (KISS mandates keeping the front 6 x holes in sequence-- less chance of mistakes).
thursday night triples at druid hill dgc draws 2 hrs prior to sunset. come one, come all.

I stand informed on the origin of the alternate numbering scheme. Even doing the 3-X-hole loop off of Hole 6 results in the same walk through the woods and across the JFT (road). Perhaps, when we design the new X-holes, we can figure a layout that logically connects nine X-holes on the front and connects nine on the back. 8)
