New Holes at Scarby: YAY or NAY

Postby doyle » Wed Dec 16, 2009 6:51 pm

after playing scarboro pretty frequently over the last year or so, i have learned to like the course more and more. i think it is an excellent lay out and challenge as far as a local 18 hole course goes.

however, after playing the new 16 and 17 i have to say that while i certainly appreciate the effort, energy, time and resources put into the new holes, i think much more could have been done to add a challenge and not a punishment to the course.

16. throwing straight up a hill into nothing but trees (yes i see the very tight alleyway one could take) is defeating.

17. after being pummelled by 16, there is nothing quite like an enduring hike even farther up a steep incline, only to get to the top where the teepad is and have to then throw straight down again...and into even more trees with even less disc routes to try.

again, i like the challenge of a wooded course. for example, #3 and #14 are in the woods but at least they give you a path to try and follow instead of blind shots into those woods.

i just feel like the hill that 16 and17 are on could have been used more effectively and it would have added more of a test of a players skill rather than how lucky one can get when hucking a disc through a forest of trees.

any other thoughts or comments? agree/disagree?

I am one of the guys who helps work on thew course. We appreciate any constructive feedback from those that play here. The course is an ongoing development, specifically the new holes. There will be some more trimming to come, to open them up a little more. Trim some, play for a while see how it feels. Once you take a tree out you can't put it back.

I'll hold off my reviews of the holes as they would be biased, but would love to here what others think.

As they are today, a mild NAY.

#16 would be a tough-but-fair challenge with just a few smaller trees removed. I did manage a '3' the other day (have played it from the long tee four times), but I felt it was more because of luck than any skill.

#17 I have also played four times, from the short tee, and have managed one '3' as well, and I thought it was by complete chance (my fading initial drive hit two trees just right, which propelled it far down the hill, pin-high and 40' to the right). This holes seems much more like a random event - the trees are larger and more would need to be removed to define a few throwing lanes - seems like a whole lot of work.

Overall, really enjoy the course, and wish it weren't so far (about 75 minutes w/o traffic) away!

As Natural has said, being one who helped with the work on hole I can't give a fair opinion. That being said, I do agree that the allys are a bit tight, but it is a work in progress. If you can remember 3 when it first opened there were several more trees that were there, but we have removed them as time has gone by, and the process will be the same here.

As for the hike we have been thinking of ways to get around it, again any suggestions are welcome. The biggest thing to keep in mind though is why we made these moves. 16-18 were too similar to each other, and 17 Basket and 18 tee created a very very dangerous situation as there was no where to stand. By creating the two new holes we also solved two holes we had no ability to make a "B" pin (Old #11 and old #17). So please keep these things in mind as you consider your feelings toward the new holes.

On a side note we will probally have some work days in the spring, and if you want to talk to us more directly about the course the core group of guys play on Tuesday nights and Sunday mornings, so feel free to join us. Here you can get your ideas out more to us, (hard to picture stuff in words you know what I mean? For example someone says "Cut that tree down on 16" :? Which tree? lol). Also just to throw it out there for the knowledge, we have either duced or heard of someone else doing it on both 16 and 17. How much is luck I couldn't tell you but it is possible. Again thanks for the interest on the course and please keep sharing your thoughts! (Just keep in mind we do what we can when we can) Thanks! See ya in the Hills!

I loved hole 17! It is going to be epic once it is @ 100%

The tee boxes on 16 were among the best on the course - nice work on them.

I like the new holes. 17 should have an alley or two cleared out for sure. 16 is fine two alleys safe alley to the left or go for it alley to the right, I played the left alley half way then made a good upshot and got the three nothing wrong with that hole.
Just Stick It!

Thanks, it took a lot of dirt to get blues teepad there. We actually got a dump truck about stuck when we built the berm it is sitting on. The next issue is gonna be getting the truck behind 11's red pad to build up the possible blue pad
