What is Disc Golf?
Disc golf is a sport that rapidly gaining popularity all around the country and in our great state. It's played in much the same way as "ball" golf but instead of trying to land a ball in a hole we try
to land a disc in a chain basket. Players count the number of throws it takes to make the basket and lowest score wins. For more general information on disc golf read our Newbie's Guide to Disc Golf in Maryland.
There are currently 12 courses in Maryland with several more just across the border in Northern Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Delaware. Chances are good that you've seen a course and didn't even know it was there. DG courses are built in public parks and have a very low environmental footprint. The only way to notice them is if you see a basket or walk over a teepad. They are relatively easy to maintain since they do not require a lot of ground maintenance. In most cases, the normal mowing and hedging done by park crews is sufficient to keep a course playable. But if not, it's very normal to see players volunteer to work on the course themselves. Many of the local players take pride in their home courses and will do their part in giving back to the parks that let them use their land.
Tournaments are held just about every other weekend throughout the entire year and players routinely meet for pickup games on certain week days. Joining a player meet is the best way to get acquainted with the sport because you get to play with some highly experienced players in a casual setting and most of them won't mind showing you a few tips throughout the round.
